English and Communications

• Through a variety of courses in composition, creative writing, speech and literature, the department seeks to encourage students to develop the critical analytical skills that foster effective oral and written communication in college, career and life. They are an essential part of students' general education requirements. 
  English Composition and Speech Communication courses are offered every semester at different times and days, including Saturdays, in face-to-face and blended formats.  For creative writing and literature courses, please check current schedule of classes.
  
  ENC 1101 – English Composition I, 3 Credits
  This is the first required general core course in college-level writing. The student will learn to compose essays and other works using various methods of development. 
  
  ENC 1102 – English Composition II, 3 Credits
  This is the second required general education core course in college-level writing.. Students will compose informative and persuasive essays, write responses to a variety of literary genres, and/or non-fiction, and produce a documented paper based on research. Prerequisite: ENC1101.
   
  CRW 2001 Creative Writing 1, 3 Credits
  Imaginative writing in selected genres.
  
  CRW 2002 Creative Writing 2, 3 Credits
  Imaginative writing in selected genres.
  
  In addition to the English composition courses, our department also offers LIT 2000 (not offered every semester; please check schedule of classes).
  
  LIT 2000 – Introduction to Literature, 3 Credits
  Students will learn about various works of literature from different genres (including but not limited to: short story, play, poetry, novel, and essay).
  Speech Communication courses are offered every semester in face-to-face and blended formats, in a flexible schedule, at different times and days including Saturdays. 
  
  SPC 1017 – Fundamentals of Speech Communication, 3 credits
  This course provides students with the oral communications skills necessary for success in personal, professional, and educational settings. Enables students to effectively use interpersonal communication, presentational speaking and group dynamics of communication through study and experiential practice.
  
  SPC 2608 – Introduction to Public Speaking, 3 credits
  This course improves the basic skills of speaking and listening through classroom exercise, group discussion, and public address, with special emphasis given to the principles of logical organization.
